TL;DR:

  • Crypto scams tied to the 2026 World Cup are already active. TRM Labs identified multiple fake ticketing sites and fraudulent betting schemes linked to the tournament.
  • TRM Labs detected four wallet addresses associated with scams connected to the event, including two fake ticketing sites.
  • The FBI and FIFA warned about fraudulent domains impersonating official sites to steal data and sell fake tickets.

TRM Labs, a blockchain intelligence firm, issued a warning about a series of crypto scams targeting fans of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The company identified multiple fraudulent operations including fake ticketing sites, schemes involving match-fixing bets and crypto promotions themed around the tournament. In total, TRM Labs tracked four wallet addresses linked to these activities.

Ari Redbord, Global Head of Policy at TRM Labs, explained that criminals do not wait for the event to begin before taking action. “Scammers build and position their infrastructure weeks in advance, then scale it at the moment public attention reaches its peak,” he stated. Redbord also highlighted that the on-chain nature of cryptocurrency payments allows investigators and compliance teams to act before losses escalate.

Scams Begin Before the Opening Whistle

The tournament, held across Canada, Mexico and the United States, kicked off on Thursday with an estimated demand of 6.5 million spectators and a projected impact of $40.9 billion on global gross domestic product, according to FIFA figures. That concentration of demand in ticketing, travel and betting represents a high-value target for all kinds of criminal operations.

Institutional warnings were issued before the tournament began. In May, the FBI published an advisory about criminals impersonating official FIFA domains to collect personal information, sell fake tickets and merchandise, and carry out other illicit activities. FIFA, for its part, warned that tickets purchased outside the official site may be declared invalid and cancelled without prior notice.

The Dark Side of Resale

Ticketing presents a particular paradox: according to reports from the Council on Foreign Relations and the Financial Times, several group-stage matches in the United States and Canada were not sold out on the official platform as of early in the week, and official resale portals still had 176,000 unsold tickets. That relative oversupply coexists with an informal demand that scammers exploit, preying on buyers who seek tickets through alternative channels without fully grasping the risks of falling victim to potential fraud.
