x402 Goes Live on Injective, Enabling AI Agents to Pay for Services Autonomously

Injective integrated x402, an open payment standard originally developed by Coinbase, now live on its mainnet, which allows artificial intelligence agents to pay for API calls in real time, without accounts, without subscriptions, and without human intervention.

This protocol uses HTTP status code 402, reserved by the web specification for decades but never functionally implemented due to the absence of a compatible payment layer. x402 works as follows: when a client queries an endpoint, the server responds with a price; the client signs a USDC transfer without broadcasting it; a facilitator processes it onchain and confirms the payment; and the server delivers the data. Everything happens within a single HTTP exchange.

Injective’s network was chosen because it settles transactions in a single block, with a latency of approximately 650 milliseconds and deterministic finality, turning each payment into reliable data before the agent must make its next decision.

That speed is what separates a protocol that functions in production from one that only works for demonstrations. For developers, the integration comes down to a middleware call on an Express server: define the route to protect, the network, the USDC asset, and the price. No shared key management, no quotas, no prior registration. The @injectivelabs/x402 repository and Injective’s official documentation include a live demo available for immediate testing.
