Tezos Launches Experimental Testnet Quantumnet To Counter Future Quantum Threats

Tezos launched Quantumnet, its first experimental post-quantum testnet, developed by engineers from Nomadic Labs, Trilitech and other ecosystem contributors.

The network brings together in a single environment the core components of a quantum-computing-resistant L1 layer, and opens a new phase in Tezos’ preparation for that scenario.

Quantumnet activates for the first time support for tz5 accounts, which allow transactions to be authorized through ML-DSA-44, the post-quantum signature scheme standardized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the United States.

In addition to those accounts, the testnet extends changes to other layers of Tezos: it replaces the Verifiable Delay Function with a baking rights distribution system based on Smooth Weighted Round Robin, substitutes BLS signatures with XMSS signatures with post-quantum STARK aggregation, and replaces the KZG commitments of the data availability layer with ZODA, a system based on two-dimensional tensor codes.

No known quantum computer can break today the public-key cryptography used by blockchains, but quantum error correction is advancing rapidly and the estimated resources needed to attack elliptic curve cryptography have fallen considerably.

Google set 2029 as the deadline to complete its own post-quantum migration. With the launch of Quantumnet, Tezos seeks to give the process the time it requires, given that preparing a blockchain involves not only updating software, but also studying new cryptographic systems, adapting infrastructure and ensuring a smooth transition for users.

For now, the environment is aimed primarily at engineers, bakers and technical contributors to the protocol.
