Ripple announced that the quantum upgrade of the XRP Ledger will be the central axis of its long-term security strategy. The company detailed an ambitious four-phase plan to achieve full post-quantum resistance by 2028. This decision comes in response to recent research from Google Quantum AI, which suggests that current elliptic curve cryptography could be vulnerable to quantum machines sooner than expected, prompting Ripple to mitigate risks such as “harvest now, decrypt later.”

The importance of this move lies in protecting the network against future attacks without disrupting current operations. Unlike Ethereum, the XRPL has the advantage of native key rotation, which facilitates the migration of funds. The plan includes testing NIST-recommended algorithms in 2026 and implementing hybrid systems, culminating in a full productive transition that will shield XRP user accounts and signatures.

Ripple aims to transform the ecosystem’s infrastructure to anticipate cryptographic obsolescence. With the price of XRP stabilizing near $1.43, the next step will be the deployment of custody prototypes and testing on the developer network (Devnet) during the coming year.
