TL;DR

  • Hedera introduced Agent Accounts, a system that allows AI agents to make autonomous payments without accessing private keys.
  • The accounts include daily spending limits, per-transaction restrictions, and lists of authorized recipients enforced through smart contracts.
  • The system supports payments in HBAR, USDC, and other Hedera tokens, along with AI agent integrations through APIs and MCP.

Hedera introduced Agent Accounts, an infrastructure designed to allow artificial intelligence (AI) agents to execute transactions autonomously on the blockchain without needing access to their owners’ private keys.

The system allows users to assign budgets and establish restrictions through smart contracts. Agents can pay for services, access data, make purchases, and settle invoices without requiring human approval for every transaction.

According to Hedera, these rules are recorded directly on the network and can only be modified by the account owner.

Hedera Allows Users to Set Spending Limits for AI Agents

Users can connect their existing Hedera wallets, create an account for an agent, and define the conditions under which it can operate.

Available restrictions include daily spending limits, maximum amounts per transaction, and lists of authorized merchants or recipients.

These conditions are embedded in smart contracts that verify each request before executing a transfer.

Funds remain in the owner’s account until a valid transaction is authorized. In addition, agents never gain access to private keys, and their permissions can be suspended or revoked directly from the wallet.

Hedera also uses its Consensus Service to record transactions and maintain a verifiable history of all activities performed.

HBAR and USDC Payments and Integration With AI Tools

Agent Accounts operates through Agentic Payment Services, an infrastructure that includes an MCP server, a REST API, and a transaction relayer.

This allows agents developed with tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor to be integrated, along with custom systems that support API connections.

Payments can be made using HBAR, USDC, and other Hedera tokens. The system also supports x402-compatible transactions to pay for digital services and individual API requests.

Each agent has an independent account with its own budget and permissions. Companies can manage these controls at the organizational level and access audit records.

The roadmap published by Hedera outlined limited testing during the fourth quarter of 2025, public testnet access in the first quarter of 2026, and mainnet availability targeted for the second quarter, subject to security reviews and legal approvals.
