TL;DR

  • Coinbase is launching perpetuals, dated futures and crypto options for eligible UK professional investors, with more than 170 contracts spanning crypto, commodities, equities and foreign exchange.
  • Perpetual contracts will offer up to 50x leverage, while dated futures provide up to 20x and crypto options include calls, puts and multi-leg strategies.
  • The rollout follows Coinbase’s MiFID license and supports its “Everything Exchange” strategy as the company expands beyond bitcoin spot trading.

Coinbase is expanding its UK derivatives business with a new suite designed exclusively for professional investors, adding perpetual contracts, dated futures and crypto options to its growing product lineup. Access will begin progressively over the coming weeks for clients who meet professional eligibility requirements. The striking part is the breadth of the rollout, which reaches beyond crypto into commodities, equities and foreign exchange. More than 170 contracts will be available, while perpetual products will trade around the clock with leverage of up to 50x, substantially widening the exchange’s offering for sophisticated market participants across multiple asset classes in Britain.

Coinbase broadens its UK strategy beyond spot crypto trading

The product structure gives professional traders several ways to manage exposure. Dated futures will feature fixed settlement dates and leverage of up to 20x, while the options offering will remain focused on cryptocurrencies, with calls, puts and multi-leg strategies available. Coinbase is effectively combining continuous leveraged markets with more traditional derivatives tools inside one UK platform. That mix could appeal to investors seeking either short-term tactical positioning or structured risk management, although access is restricted to clients classified as professionals rather than the broader retail audience that uses Coinbase’s standard trading products.

Coinbase is launching perpetuals

The launch follows Coinbase’s recently announced MiFID license, which the company says expanded its permissions to offer derivatives in the UK. It also fits within the company’s broader “Everything Exchange” strategy, which is pushing the platform beyond crypto spot trading into equities, stablecoins, savings and borrowing. The UK expansion is increasingly looking like a multi-asset strategy rather than a simple extension of Coinbase’s crypto business. Last week, the exchange also began rolling out access to nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks for eligible UK users, placing equities alongside existing crypto and fiat holdings.

The diversification is also visible in Coinbase’s financial mix. In its second-quarter report, the company said 88% of net revenue came from sources other than bitcoin spot trading, while its global crypto trading-volume share rose to a record 10.3% from 9.1% in the first quarter. The derivatives launch therefore lands at a moment when Coinbase is deliberately reducing its dependence on a single trading category. With professional UK clients gaining access to leveraged multi-asset contracts and crypto options, the company is using regulatory permissions to build a broader market infrastructure while expanding revenue opportunities beyond traditional spot activity.
