TL;DR

  • Steak ’n Shake says Bitcoin payments have helped support a sharp rise in same-store sales.
  • Its parent, Biglari Holdings, reported a 13.8% increase in domestic comparable sales during Q2 2026.
  • The chain now combines Lightning payments, a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and employee BTC bonuses, turning crypto from a checkout option into part of its operating and treasury strategy.

Bitcoin is becoming part of the business model at Steak ’n Shake, the burger chain founded in 1934, more than 15 months after it began accepting the cryptocurrency at its restaurants. The company says Bitcoin has helped attract customers while adding another payment and treasury option.

Steak ’n Shake said on Aug. 30 that customers using Bitcoin continue to support its restaurants and that stronger business, along with savings, has helped the chain reinvest in food quality. The company also described itself as a Bitcoin company.

The sales figures provide a measurable backdrop. Biglari Holdings, Steak ’n Shake’s parent, reported that domestic same-store sales at company-operated and franchise-partner-operated restaurants increased 13.8% in the second quarter of 2026. Restaurant-segment pre-tax operating earnings reached $6.3 million, compared with $3.7 million a year earlier.

Bitcoin Becomes Part Of The Restaurant Strategy

The chain’s crypto integration goes beyond allowing customers to spend BTC. Steak ’n Shake processes Bitcoin payments through the Lightning Network, designed to make smaller transactions faster and cheaper than on-chain transfers. Customer Bitcoin payments are directed into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve rather than immediately converted into dollars.

In January, Steak ’n Shake announced two additions to its Bitcoin reserve worth $10 million and $5 million in notional value. The reserve gives the company continued Bitcoin exposure alongside its restaurant operations.

The strategy also extends to employees. Steak ’n Shake introduced a Bitcoin bonus of $0.21 for every hour worked for hourly employees at company-operated restaurants. The bonus carries a two-year vesting period, adding Bitcoin to compensation rather than replacing regular wages.

A Different Model For Mainstream Bitcoin Adoption

For crypto businesses, Steak ’n Shake shows how Bitcoin can move beyond trading and investment products. Customers can use BTC for a purchase, the merchant can retain those receipts as an asset, and employees can receive Bitcoin through a benefit.

The sales data does not prove Bitcoin alone caused the 13.8% increase. Restaurant performance also depends on pricing, traffic, marketing and store mix. Still, the company’s Bitcoin expansion suggests management sees commercial value in making crypto part of its operating approach.
