TL;DR

  • Fred Ehrsam, Coinbase co-founder and Primavera backer, has secured oil production-sharing agreements with Venezuela’s PDVSA.
  • The deal could eventually affect crypto markets through changes in oil supply, inflation and global liquidity.
  • Venezuela also recorded $44.6 billion in crypto transaction flows during 2025, reinforcing the country’s unusual connection between energy resources and digital assets.

Fred Ehrsam’s Venezuela oil venture is creating an unusual bridge between crypto wealth and the global energy market. The Coinbase co-founder has spent months in Caracas as Primavera pursues production-sharing agreements with Venezuela’s state oil company PDVSA.

The move matters for crypto investors because a sustained increase in Venezuelan oil output could influence crude prices, inflation expectations, interest rates and liquidity conditions that shape demand for Bitcoin and Ether.

What Primavera Is Seeking In Venezuela

Primavera has secured production-sharing contracts with PDVSA and is targeting oil assets in Venezuela’s Orinoco Belt, one of the world’s largest concentrations of extra-heavy crude. Ehrsam, 38, has no previous oil-industry track record, but Primavera has brought in energy-sector expertise as it attempts to build an operating position.

The scale of Venezuela’s resource base explains the interest. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates the country held about 303 billion barrels of proven crude reserves in 2023, the largest national reserve base in the world. Yet production has remained far below that potential because of aging infrastructure, limited investment, technical constraints and sanctions.

The International Energy Agency estimated Venezuelan output at 1.12 million barrels per day in July 2026. That remains modest relative to the country’s reserves, leaving room for investment-led growth if operating and legal conditions improve.

Why Venezuela’s Oil Matters For Bitcoin

Oil does not determine Bitcoin’s price directly, but energy costs feed into inflation and monetary policy. Higher crude prices can increase inflation pressure and keep interest rates elevated, potentially tightening liquidity for risk assets. Additional Venezuelan supply could have the opposite effect by easing pressure on global energy markets.

That relationship matters while oil markets remain sensitive to geopolitical disruptions. Brent crude recently traded above $100 as tensions in the Middle East raised supply concerns, showing how quickly energy shocks can influence broader financial markets.

Venezuela also has a substantial connection to digital assets. Chainalysis estimated $44.6 billion in Venezuelan crypto transaction flows during 2025, reflecting how residents use international crypto platforms amid monetary and financial constraints.
