TL;DR

  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says the exchange is developing financial accounts for AI agents.
  • The system could provide AI with isolated accounts, spending limits and autonomous control over approved funds.
  • Coinbase is expanding infrastructure for machine-to-machine payments through USDC, Base and the x402 protocol.

Coinbase is developing financial infrastructure that would allow AI agents to hold and manage money independently, according to CEO Brian Armstrong. The initiative, referred to as Coinbase for Agents, could give artificial intelligence its own financial account, separate from a user’s primary funds and designed for controlled autonomous transactions.

Armstrong revealed the project after David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails, posted on X about the need for an “agentic bank.” Hansson described a service where users could provide a machine with a spending limit and allow it to handle payments independently. Armstrong replied that Coinbase is already building the financial account for AI.

Coinbase Builds Accounts For Autonomous AI

The proposed system would allow models such as ChatGPT or Claude to interact with Coinbase through tools including a local Model Context Protocol server. Rather than giving an AI unrestricted access to a user’s cards or main account, the architecture could rely on an isolated sub-account with predefined controls.

Users would be able to establish daily spending limits and maximum transaction amounts, creating a framework in which an agent can execute approved financial tasks without requiring constant human intervention. This approach could make crypto particularly useful for software that needs to purchase digital services, subscriptions or other resources automatically.

Coinbase has also been testing AI-driven financial activity internally. Earlier in 2026, Armstrong reduced the company’s workforce by roughly 14%, while promoting smaller teams supported by AI agents. The exchange subsequently expanded experiments involving AI access to derivatives and S&P 500 stocks, alongside tests in which agents planned travel and paid for hotels using USDC on Base.

USDC And x402 Support Machine Payments

A major challenge for autonomous software is enabling small, frequent payments without relying on traditional subscriptions or manually managed credentials. Coinbase has been exploring this area through x402, a protocol designed to facilitate pay-per-request transactions using digital assets.

With this model, an AI agent can pay for individual actions directly from its cryptocurrency balance rather than repeatedly requesting API credentials or human approval. Agentic Wallet currently provides part of this functionality, while deeper integration with Coinbase’s agent-focused infrastructure could simplify the process.
