The ElizaOS token posted a 7% drop in the last 24 hours, more than 30% over the month, and hit an all-time low of $0.000274, according to data from CoinGecko. At the time of publication, the token trades at $0.0002788 with a market capitalization of $2.09 million, a collapse that contrasts sharply with the $2.5 billion peak it reached in January 2025, when the project still operated under the name AI16Z.
The decline was triggered by a blunt statement from Eliza Labs founder Shaw Walters, who declared the token “completely dead” and announced the dissolution of the Eliza Foundation. Walters clarified that he no longer holds or backs the token and that development of the open-source software will continue without a foundation structure or associated cryptocurrency.
ElizaOS: the End of a Million-Dollar Promise
The immediate trigger was the resolution of a lawsuit filed in April against Eliza Labs, Walters, Sebastian Quinn-Watson, and the AI16Z DAO. The plaintiffs, represented by Burwick Law, alleged false advertising, deceptive practices, negligent misrepresentation, and unjust enrichment.
Walters described the lawsuit as “ridiculous,” but acknowledged that the project lacked the capital to sustain the legal dispute. The out-of-court settlement involved the transfer of the remaining treasury to the plaintiffs. Court records indicate that the lead plaintiff’s claims were dismissed with prejudice on July 8, while those of the proposed class were dismissed without prejudice.
Walters also ruled out any support mechanism for the token: he confirmed there would be no token buybacks or future intervention on supply. He was categorical about the future: “I’m starting from scratch and I’m never going to let a token get near the project again”, he wrote.
The project was launched in October 2024 as ai16z with the initial goal of raising $75,000 to build an autonomous investor. In January 2025, it was rebranded as ElizaOS following pressure from Andreessen Horowitz over the similarity to its a16z brand.
