Spiko became the first UCITS fund in Europe to accept stablecoin payments, after integrating Coinbase Payments as settlement infrastructure. The move targets two of the company’s vehicles —the EU T-Bills Money Market Fund and the US T-Bills Money Market Fund— which now admit USDC and EURC as capital entry and exit methods: operations are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays.
The integration eliminates the traditional T+2 settlement cycle, which has historically represented one of the greatest bottlenecks in the institutional financial system. Through the Payments API and the Base network —the layer 2 of Ethereum developed by Coinbase—, institutional investors can subscribe to or redeem Treasury bill positions within minutes, without the need for manual bank transfers or operational delays.
UCITS represent the strictest standard of retail fund regulation in Europe, are continuously supervised and offer rigorous investor protection. The fact that this type of structure adopts stablecoins as a payment method sets a very important precedent for the industry. A recent EY-Parthenon and Coinbase survey revealed that 88% of institutional investors identified T+0 settlement as one of the main reasons to explore the use of stablecoins in their operations.
