Solana is entering another stage of its performance roadmap as the network prepares for a 250ms slot time. The upgrade is expected to become effective around 05:01 UTC on September 18, bringing the blockchain closer to its longer-term 200ms target. Anza, the development firm behind Solana’s Agave validator software, confirmed that the 250ms feature is now pending on mainnet-beta.
The change comes through SIMD-0525, which divides the reduction in slot times into separate stages. Solana has already moved from 400ms to 350ms and then to 300ms on mainnet. The next step would bring the interval between slots down to 250ms, while the final 200ms stage remains under development and has not yet received a mainnet date.

Solana Speed Upgrade Moves Toward 250ms
The September activation follows a staged process designed to monitor network performance. Under the current schedule, the feature is pending during epoch 1035, becomes active during epoch 1036 and takes effect at the beginning of epoch 1037. Each stage has its own feature gate rather than changing the network’s timing parameters in a single update.
Reducing slot time does not automatically double transaction capacity. Instead, it allows the network to create slots more frequently while adjusting certain per-slot limits proportionally. At 250ms, Solana can produce a new slot roughly four times per second, compared with 2.5 times per second at the original 400ms setting. The eventual 200ms target would raise that frequency to five slots per second.

Faster Blocks Could Support Solana’s Growing On-Chain Economy
Shorter slots can reduce the time required for transactions to reach the blockchain and give applications a faster view of network activity. The change can benefit latency-sensitive applications such as oracle consumers and automated market-making systems, while also reducing the amount of time a single leader controls block production.
