TL;DR

  • Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management increased its position in MSTR by 17.4%, moving from 307,183 to 360,613 shares, valued at approximately $35 million.
  • The Japanese firm holds indirect exposure to Bitcoin through Strategy, the largest corporate BTC holder in the world.
  • Nomura Holdings and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings also maintain positions in MSTR, reinforcing the interest of Japan’s institutional sector.

Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management, the asset management subsidiary of Japanese financial giant Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, deepened its stake in Strategy —formerly known as MicroStrategy— by adding 53,430 shares to its existing block. The total position now stands at 360,613 MSTR shares, valued at approximately $35 million according to the most recent regulatory filing.

The transaction represents a 17.4% increase from the 307,183 shares reported as of March 31, establishing the institution as one of the most active Japanese institutional investors in the industry.

Mitsubishi’s Long History with MSTR

Historical data from 13F filings shows that the relationship between Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management and Strategy runs deeper than one might assume. As early as 2011, the firm reported approximately 2,000 shares of MicroStrategy, a figure that climbed to roughly 3,700 in March 2013.

The position disappeared from the record for several years and resurfaced in 2023, when the company held just 14 shares of MSTR. From that point, accumulation was steady: by late 2024, the portfolio already exceeded 103,000 shares.

This growth reflects the interest of Japan’s financial system in gaining exposure to Bitcoin without acquiring the asset directly, using Strategy as a vehicle.

Japan’s Institutional Appetite for Bitcoin

Mitsubishi UFJ is not the only firm turning to MSTR or similar products. Nomura Holdings ranks among the most prominent Japanese institutional holders of MSTR, alongside Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings, another firm with considerable exposure to that stock.

The phenomenon extends beyond the equity market. Japan is also home to one of the most recognized corporate Bitcoin treasury strategies at the global level: Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed company, adopted Bitcoin as its primary treasury asset in April 2024.

Japan’s financial ecosystem is building, gradually but steadily, a structural exposure to the largest crypto asset in the market.
