Kenya, Morocco and NigeriaĀ became the first countries to implementĀ ADAPT, theĀ Africa Digital Access and Public Infrastructure for TradeĀ initiative designed to build aĀ public, open and interoperableĀ digital infrastructure for African trade. The process is led by the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) alongside the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, the World Economic Forum and theĀ IOTA Foundation.
The three countries were selected following an assessment that consideredĀ political commitment, regulatory maturity, existing digital infrastructure and private sector participation. Implementation includes the integration of digital identity systems, cross-border data exchange and payment interoperability,Ā all built on TWIN, the open digital infrastructure that underpins ADAPT.
ADAPT’s immediate objective will be toĀ enable real-time data exchange and digitize trade documentation, replacing paper-based processes with verified and immutable records. The three countries will also begin testing regulatory frameworks for digital currencies, includingĀ stablecoins, with the goal of reducing costs and accelerating cross-border settlement.
