CBC reported on June 10, 2026, that Trenton Richard David Johnston, a 20-year-old Canadian, pleaded guilty in Miami federal court to money-laundering conspiracy. The case centers on a social engineering crypto scam that stole at least $13.04M in Bitcoin and other digital assets.

The scheme affected victims in California who were allegedly deceived by impersonators posing as Google employees and crypto security representatives. According to CBC, investigators linked the stolen funds to luxury spending, including cars, jewelry, private flights and Miami nightlife, making the scale of the spending as striking as the theft itself.

The next point to watch is sentencing. CBC reported that Johnston agreed to deportation back to Canada after sentencing, while the court has not yet announced the final sentencing date.
