TL;DR
- Coinbase launched regulated derivatives contracts in Canada through Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), registered with the CFTC.
- The platform offers 23 perpetual and expiring futures contracts on assets such as Bitcoin, ETH, and SOL, with leverage of up to 10x.
- Global crypto derivatives volume is 4.4 times that of spot trading, yet Canadians had no regulated market to access those contracts until now.
Coinbase announced the launch of derivatives contracts for Canadian investors, marking a turning point for a market that historically relied on offshore or unregulated platforms to access this type of instrument.
The product offering is channeled through Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc. (CFM), an entity registered as a futures commission merchant with the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
The initial catalog includes 23 perpetual futures contracts and expiring futures on assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, five commodity futures covering gold, silver, and oil, and futures on the COIN50 index. The contracts are designed with reduced sizes to require less initial capital, and offer leverage of up to 10x in both long and short positions.
Coinbase Democratizes the Markets
According to data cited in the official announcement, global derivatives volume on cryptocurrencies equals 4.4 times the volume of spot trading, a ratio that reflects the structural demand for these products. However, Canadian traders had no regulated platform through which to access that liquidity, which limited their ability to hedge portfolios or take market positions with institutional backing.
The Bank of Canada estimates that one third of the country’s publicly listed non-financial corporations actively use derivatives to manage risks on their revenues. Coinbase’s expansion seeks to improve and democratize those tools, which until now had been reserved for large financial institutions, making them available to sophisticated retail investors.
As part of the launch, the company announced competitive pricing conditions for a limited time for eligible Canadian users. The exchange presented this expansion as part of its mission to broaden economic freedom and establish itself as a platform from which users can manage the entirety of their financial lives.
