TL;DR
- Binance VIP and Institutional head Catherine Chen says hedge funds are showing interest in crypto venues for arbitrage tied to cash equities and perpetual futures.
- She points to deeper liquidity, 24/7 trading and weekend price discovery as advantages, while stressing that institutional adoption remains early and may develop over 12 to 18 months.
- Chen says Binance TradFi perpetual volume rose toward $400 billion every 30 days as cross-asset trading expands.
Traditional hedge funds are showing more active interest in crypto venues as they examine arbitrage opportunities created by around-the-clock markets, according to Catherine Chen, Binance’s Head of VIP and Institutional. Speaking around TOKEN2049 Singapore, Chen said funds that had previously been curious are increasingly exploring trades linking traditional-finance instruments with crypto venues, including cash equities and perpetual futures. Her thesis is that deeper liquidity, 24/7 trading and weekend price discovery are making crypto markets more relevant to professional arbitrage strategies. The shift also reflects how crypto trading infrastructure is becoming more usable for institutional participants.
Hedge Funds Explore Arbitrage Across Different Market Clocks
Chen said liquidity had historically been a constraint when comparable instruments appeared on second-tier, third-tier or DeFi venues, where hedge funds could struggle to deploy meaningful capital. Binance’s broader push into equity-linked products has changed the available market depth, while continuous trading creates periods when crypto venues remain active after traditional exchanges close. That combination can create price-discovery and arbitrage opportunities across market structures that operate on different clocks. The dynamic is visible in Binance’s 24/7 bStocks activity, where a significant share of equity-linked volume has occurred outside regular U.S. market hours.

The opportunity is still developing rather than producing an immediate institutional wave. Chen said these early signals are something she would watch over the next 12 to 18 months and does not expect flows to surge overnight. She also described movement in the opposite direction, with crypto-native clients adding more instruments tied to traditional finance as they build hybrid portfolios. The convergence is therefore working both ways: hedge funds are examining crypto-native execution, while existing crypto participants are expanding into TradFi-linked exposure. That crossover is also reflected in the growth of RWA perpetual markets across major crypto venues.
Chen cited rapid growth in Binance’s TradFi-linked activity, saying cash-equity assets under management increased from roughly $800 million-$900 million to $1.4 billion. TradFi perpetual futures volume, meanwhile, rose from about $20 billion-$30 billion per month when the products launched early this year to roughly $400 billion every 30 days. Those figures show accelerating use, but Chen still framed tokenization and cross-asset trading as early-stage markets without a single institutional standard. She argued that regulatory clarity could matter more than any individual venue’s product lineup for long-term market convergence, while Binance continues expanding institutional trading infrastructure.
