TL;DR

  • Robinhood can generate approximately $21 in revenue from a $1,000 prediction-market trade, compared with just $0.12 from an equivalent stock transaction.
  • Event contracts generated $173 million in Q3 2026, surpassing the $121 million earned from equity trading.
  • Trading volume reached a record 16.4 billion contracts, strengthening Robinhood’s position in the rapidly expanding prediction-market sector.

Robinhood is discovering that prediction markets can be considerably more profitable than traditional stock trading. The brokerage generated approximately 175 times more revenue from an equivalent prediction-market transaction, revealing how alternative financial products are creating new business opportunities. Its latest quarterly results confirm that event contracts have become one of the company’s strongest revenue drivers.

How Robinhood Generates 175 Times More Revenue From Prediction Markets

The difference comes primarily from how each market generates revenue.

When customers purchase stocks through Robinhood, the platform generally earns money through payment for order flow, receiving compensation from market makers that execute transactions. During Q3 2026, its equity-trading revenue rate averaged approximately 0.0122%, generating just $0.12 from a $1,000 stock purchase.

Prediction contracts follow a different structure. A contract priced at $0.50 typically pays $1 if the predicted outcome occurs and nothing if it does not. Consequently, a $1,000 position can purchase 2,000 contracts.

According to a Wall Street Journal analysis, Robinhood generated approximately 1.05 cents in average revenue per event contract. Applying that figure to 2,000 contracts produces approximately $21, representing a 175-fold difference compared with the stock transaction.

This comparison does not mean every prediction-market customer pays a fixed 2.1% commission. Actual revenue depends on contract pricing, execution arrangements and trading activity. Nevertheless, the figures illustrate the commercial potential of a market that continues to attract retail participation.

Prediction Markets Become A Major Growth Engine For Robinhood

Robinhood launched its dedicated prediction-markets hub in March 2025, initially offering contracts tied to economic announcements and major sporting events. This expansion allowed the brokerage to enter a new segment of financial trading.

The business expanded rapidly. In Q3 2026, event-contract revenue reached $173 million, compared with $27 million during the same period in 2025. Trading activity also climbed more than sevenfold year over year to a record 16.4 billion contracts.

The company also reported $1.42 billion in total quarterly revenue, while event contracts generated more income than its traditional equity-trading business. This shift demonstrates how prediction markets are becoming an important part of Robinhood’s business model.

Another important development is Rothera, an exchange developed through a joint venture involving Robinhood and Susquehanna International Group. The platform contributed $28 million to Q3 event-contract revenue, demonstrating how ownership stakes in trading infrastructure can create additional income streams.

Can Robinhood Maintain Its Prediction-Market Advantage?

Competition and regulation remain important challenges. Established financial institutions are exploring similar products, while regulators continue examining how sports-related event contracts fit within existing derivatives and gambling frameworks. Regulatory clarity will play an important role in determining the sector’s long-term growth.

However, prediction markets offer something valuable to financial platforms. They transform opinions about economic, political and sporting outcomes into tradable financial instruments, creating new opportunities for market participation.

For Robinhood, this creates an opportunity to diversify beyond stocks and cryptocurrencies. If adoption continues expanding and regulatory clarity improves, event contracts could become an increasingly important component of retail financial markets.
