Standard Chartered has launched a cryptocurrency trading service for affluent clients in the United Arab Emirates, giving eligible investors direct access to Bitcoin and Ether through their existing banking relationships. The move marks the first time the bank has offered direct cryptocurrency trading to wealthy clients and is also described as the first offering of its kind from an international bank in the UAE.
The new service will initially be available to clients classified as Professional Investors. By bringing digital asset trading into a regulated banking environment, the lender is aiming to meet rising demand from affluent and high-net-worth individuals seeking exposure to cryptocurrencies as part of diversified portfolios.
Direct Trading Through Existing Banking Relationships
Eligible clients can buy and sell Bitcoin and Ether through their existing Standard Chartered bank accounts without needing separate cryptocurrency wallets or third-party trading platforms. The service is designed to simplify access to digital assets while maintaining banking-level operational controls.
According to Standard Chartered, all transactions will take place within the bank’s ecosystem through a closed-loop model. Custody and settlement will also be managed internally, reducing exposure to risks associated with third-party wallet providers and external trading venues.

Integrated Digital Asset Infrastructure
The new offering brings together wealth and retail banking operations with corporate and investment banking capabilities, supported by Zodia Markets, which is backed by the bank’s SC Ventures unit. The solution combines custody, liquidity, and client access within a single digital asset framework.
A global first for Standard Chartered, the launch reflects the bank’s strategy of expanding regulated digital asset services for affluent investors. The institution said growing regulatory clarity and increasing institutional adoption have encouraged greater interest in cryptocurrencies among wealth management clients.
UAE Launch Supported by Regulatory Approval
Standard Chartered received licensing approval from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), allowing the service to operate within the country’s regulatory framework. The UAE was selected as the launch market due to its focus on innovation, digital assets, and supportive regulatory environment.
Executives at Standard Chartered said clients are increasingly seeking secure access to digital assets through trusted financial institutions rather than standalone crypto platforms. Beyond this launch, Standard Chartered already provides eligible clients with access to crypto ETFs, structured products, and over-the-counter derivatives. The bank also indicated that the trading solution is expected to expand into additional markets over time.
