Polish authorities charged a former police officer as part of the investigation into the collapse of exchange Zondacrypto, while experts and prosecutors examine the fuel depot where the platform’s founder was last seen before disappearing in March 2022.
The detainee, identified as Artur K. following the Polish convention of abbreviating suspects’ surnames, was arrested by agents of the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime, at the request of the organized crime department of the National Prosecution Service.
The charges include membership in an organized criminal group, large-scale property damage against BitBay and BB Trade Estonia, money laundering and computer fraud.
During the search of his residence, documentation linked to Zondacrypto’s operations was found. Prosecution spokesperson Anna Adamiak stated that prosecutors will assess whether to request pretrial detention.
At least five individuals have been charged since August, among them Radosław P., former head of the Polish Olympic Committee. The platform’s founder, Sylwester Suszek, created the exchange in Katowice in 2014 under the name BitBay, which later relaunched as Zondacrypto and grew to 1.3 million customers.
The prosecution is treating his disappearance as unlawful deprivation of liberty. The platform froze withdrawals in April and its license was revoked on June 29 by Estonia’s financial intelligence unit. Thousands of customers filed formal complaints.
