TL;DR

  • Bitcoin jumped 6% to a local high of $81,034 on Friday, triggering roughly $250 million in crypto short liquidations over four hours.
  • WTI crude rebounded toward $98 as Gulf supply concerns persisted, while U.S. 30-year Treasury yields climbed to 5.34% despite Bitcoin’s advance.
  • BTC reclaimed its $76,660 True Market Mean and moved above the $80,500 corporate treasury cost basis, but $82,000 remains the next key breakout level for bulls.

Bitcoin surged above $80,000 on Friday as turbulence in global energy markets coincided with a rapid rebound in U.S. bond yields, producing an unusual backdrop for risk assets. BTC climbed 6% and reached a local high of $81,034 on Bitstamp after Wall Street opened, while short sellers were caught off guard by the move. The breakout turned a volatile macro session into a powerful squeeze, with roughly $250 million in crypto short positions liquidated within four hours. Bitcoin’s advance also restored price levels that had remained difficult to reclaim during September.

Bitcoin Faces $82,000 Test as Oil and Bond Markets Swing

Oil markets helped shape the day’s tension. U.S. WTI crude fell as low as $94.80 per barrel before recovering toward $98 during Asian trading, while concerns persisted over constrained Gulf supply. The International Energy Agency said oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz averaged 7.6 million barrels per day in August, 13.1 million below levels recorded before the U.S.-Iran war. The fuel crisis is forcing markets to weigh shrinking energy buffers against the possibility that higher prices and weaker demand may be needed to restore balance. That uncertainty quickly spilled into government bonds.

U.S. 30-year Treasury yields rose again amid the oil uncertainty, reaching 5.34% on the day after climbing 90 basis points. Higher yields would normally add pressure to speculative assets, yet Bitcoin moved in the opposite direction as buyers absorbed available liquidity and pushed through $80,000. The divergence made Friday’s rally especially striking, because BTC accelerated even as long-term borrowing costs moved higher. The move also followed interest-rate increases in both the United States and Japan this week, adding another layer of monetary pressure to a market already dealing with volatile energy conditions.

Bitcoin now faces a familiar technical test. Analyst Rekt Capital identified $82,000 as a key breakout level, warning that another rejection there could create a double-rejection pattern similar to the failed rebound seen in mid-May. BTC also reclaimed its True Market Mean at $76,660, while the aggregate cost basis of corporate Bitcoin treasuries sits near $80,500. Holding above those cost-basis levels could strengthen the recovery, but $82,000 remains the immediate hurdle separating Friday’s surge from a cleaner breakout. After racing beyond $80,000, Bitcoin’s next move will show whether the squeeze can develop into sustained momentum through the weekend ahead.
