Metaplanet transferred 3,881 bitcoins valued at approximately $250 million, according to data from Arkham and Lookonchain, a move that raised significant concern in the community given the current market context.

The Japanese company, considered the third-largest public Bitcoin holder in the world, currently holds 43,000 BTC following its last recorded purchase in early July, when it acquired 2,823 BTC for $222 million.

Metaplanet’s average acquisition price exceeds $96,000 per unit, implying a total outlay of over $4.1 billion to build its reserve. Bitcoin’s correction over recent months left the company with a paper loss of $1.4 billion, and as of now there is no official confirmation of any intent to sell.

The transfer does not necessarily imply a liquidation, but the timing caused unease across the sector. The trend of treasury companies selling Bitcoin positions has deepened throughout the year, with Strategy being the most prominent driver of that movement, followed by miners and other firms holding BTC on their balance sheets.

Metaplanet had remained on the sidelines of that dynamic until now, although its goal of reaching 100,000 BTC before the end of 2026 looks increasingly distant given the current pace of purchases.
