Volvo Group is testing its own cryptocurrency on a closed blockchain network to simplify transactions with materials and transportation suppliers. The company describes the project as an internal exploration with no commercial purpose or industrial implementation.
Ivan Branco, Head of Information Management, AI and Analytics at Volvo Group Trucks Operations, confirmed the initiative in a recent interview with the Cardano Foundation. According to Branco, the goal was to create a closed environment that would allow orders and transportation data to be recorded immutably, outside of traditional currencies and using a cryptocurrency developed specifically for that operation.

The project is part of Volvo Group’s strategy, which aims to apply blockchain to the efficiency of its supply chain, including product traceability for remanufacturing and compliance with European regulations such as the Digital Product Passport.
Branco also noted that tracking the country of origin of spare parts and assembled vehicles represents a concrete legal problem under geopolitical sanctions, citing the case of exports to Russia as an example. The executive acknowledged that blockchain adoption faces some real obstacles: complexity in legacy systems, low technological literacy and scalability challenges.
While the project remains at the ideation stage, sister company Volvo Cars has been applying blockchain since 2019 to trace cobalt in electric vehicle batteries.
