TL;DR

  • Vitalik Buterin says roughly 90% of his net worth is exposed to crypto, effectively placing most of his wealth on the opposite side of a potential 50% Bitcoin crash.
  • The debate centers on whether advanced AI could threaten Bitcoin’s security within two years.
  • Buterin argues that decentralized networks can adapt through software, mining and infrastructure changes before such risks become systemic.

Vitalik Buterin has rejected a prediction that Bitcoin could lose more than half its value within two years because of advances in artificial intelligence, arguing that his own financial exposure reflects confidence in crypto networks adapting to emerging technological threats.

AI-risk commentator Liron Shapira recently assigned a 50% probability to Bitcoin falling more than 50% over the next two years. His argument focuses on the possibility that increasingly capable AI systems could undermine security assumptions behind Bitcoin and other decentralized networks.

Buterin took the opposite position, saying that around 90% of his net worth is already exposed to crypto assets. With BTC trading near $79,500, a 50% decline would take Bitcoin toward $39,750.

The Ethereum co-founder’s comments do not mean that 90% of his wealth is held directly in Bitcoin. His holdings include Ethereum and other crypto assets, so the statement is better understood as a broad financial commitment to the resilience of decentralized technology.

Vitalik Buterin Backs Bitcoin’s Ability To Adapt

The central issue is whether AI could create a technical vulnerability that Bitcoin cannot address quickly enough. Shapira did not identify a specific attack mechanism in the discussion, leaving the scenario largely dependent on how rapidly AI capabilities improve.

Buterin argues that Bitcoin can respond to many security problems without requiring every participant in the ecosystem to reach immediate agreement. Changes involving software clients, mining pools or infrastructure can be implemented through coordinated upgrades and technical changes.

A much more severe scenario would involve the underlying cryptographic assumptions or proof-of-work system becoming fundamentally compromised. Buterin considers that possibility extremely unlikely, while acknowledging that technological risks deserve attention.

This argument also overlaps with concerns about quantum computing. Bitcoin developers and researchers have increasingly examined how future advances could affect cryptographic systems and whether networks should prepare before practical threats emerge.

Vitalik Buterin says roughly 90% of his net worth is exposed to crypto, effectively placing most of his wealth on the opposite side of a potential 50% Bitcoin crash.

Bitcoin Faces Conventional Market Pressures

The AI debate arrives while Bitcoin remains sensitive to traditional financial conditions. BTC recently traded below $80,000 after reaching roughly $82,179 on Sept. 3, as stronger U.S. employment data influenced expectations around Federal Reserve policy.

Market participants are also watching the $78,000 to $78,500 area as an important support zone, while $83,000 to $84,000 represents a key area on the upside.
