TL;DR

  • USDT will return to the Bitcoin network this month through Utexo, a Tether-backed project that raised $7.5 million in 2026.
  • Utexo will use the RGB protocol with client-side validation to keep transaction data off Bitcoin’s public ledger.
  • Planned use cases include private transfers, direct swaps between BTC and USDT, and loans using native bitcoin as collateral.

USDT will return to the Bitcoin network this month for the first time in over a decade, through the infrastructure developed by Utexo, a project backed by Tether.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, teased it last week in a few words on X: “It’s coming home.” USDT, the largest stablecoin in the world, with a market capitalization of nearly $190 billion, was born on Bitcoin in 2014 on the Omni protocol, before Ethereum and later Tron became its main operating networks.

Utexo, founded in 2025 and having raised $7.5 million earlier this year, obtained the commercial license to issue USDT on Bitcoin. Viktor Ihnatiuk, co-founder of the company, confirmed that the license includes the use of the stablecoin’s brand to bring it to exchanges, wallets, and payment providers. “Tether was always a Bitcoin company,” Ihnatiuk said. “For them, Bitcoin is a haven of stability, alongside gold.”

USDT on Bitcoin: Privacy by Design

The proposal from Utexo goes beyond simply reintroducing the stablecoin on-chain. Its architecture combines the RGB protocol with client-side validation, which keeps transaction data off Bitcoin’s public ledger.

Unlike Ethereum or Tron, which operate with account-based models where balances and movements are exposed in public records, Utexo anchors ownership in unspent transaction outputs, known as UTXOs, and reserves the Bitcoin ledger solely for cryptographically proving ownership.

The three core use cases Utexo puts forward are: private USDT transfers, direct swaps between native BTC and USDT without going through an exchange, and loans in which bitcoin acts as collateral without needing to wrap it on another blockchain, as happens with tokens like WBTC.

Utexo Will Not Be Able to Freeze Addresses

The privacy model, however, comes with important technical nuances. Since RGB assets are based on Bitcoin UTXOs, Utexo cannot freeze addresses in the same way Tether does on Ethereum. Instead, it will maintain a blacklist of UTXOs associated with illicit or sanctioned activity, which it will distribute to exchanges and other providers to render those funds irredeemable.

Once the stablecoin issuance on Bitcoin goes live, the next step will be to extend the infrastructure to Lightning Network, the second-layer solution designed for faster and cheaper payments.
