TL;DR:
- Upbit matched Binance with $5.29 million in daily SHIB spot volume, while OKX and Bybit trailed at $2.63 million and $1.65 million respectively.
- A Korean whale accumulated 361 billion SHIB before test transfers to Upbit and Korbit, while the local premium index stayed between +0.53% and +1.50%.
- SHIB still represents only 0.41% of Upbit turnover, far behind XRP’s $376.4 million daily volume, showing the surge is intense but highly concentrated.
South Korea’s Upbit has now matched Binance in daily spot trading volume for Shiba Inu, with both exchanges recording $5.29 million in turnover for their respective SHIB pairs. The parity is remarkable because a single domestic platform has caught a major global crypto exchange in liquidity for one memecoin. Other major venues were well behind: OKX posted $2.63 million in daily SHIB volume, while Bybit reached $1.65 million. The sudden concentration of activity highlights how aggressively Korean traders are participating in SHIB even as the token remains a relatively small part of Upbit’s overall business.
The recent surge coincided with unusually large capital movements around the Korean market. Onchain monitoring tracked one major local player accumulating 361 billion SHIB in a single address before sending test transfers to Upbit and Korbit. Large-holder activity and exchange wallet reshuffling suggest liquidity was being actively positioned around the burst in Korean demand. Upbit also moved billions of SHIB between cold and hot wallets to maintain trading liquidity. At the same time, the Korean premium index stayed between +0.53% and +1.50% during the first half of September, showing domestic buyers paying above global averages.

Korean Premium Keeps Local SHIB Liquidity Elevated
South Korea’s capital controls help explain why that premium can persist. Restrictions on international arbitrage make it harder for traders to quickly close price differences between Korean exchanges and global venues. Instead of immediately disappearing through arbitrage, excess buying pressure can show up as unusually concentrated local trading volume. Weekly charts comparing SHIB/KRW on Upbit with SHIB/USDT on Binance show similar long-term downtrends from the 2024 highs, but the Korean pair displays pronounced volume spikes around local reversals. Current Upbit consolidation is also occurring near a historical Volume Profile area with especially dense trading activity.
Despite the headline parity with Binance, SHIB remains modest within Upbit itself. The SHIB/KRW pair ranks only 33rd on the exchange and represents just 0.41% of total turnover. That makes the $5.29 million figure more a sign of isolated Korean enthusiasm than evidence that SHIB dominates the country’s crypto market. XRP remains Upbit’s leading retail asset with $376.4 million in daily volume, nearly one-third of exchange trading, ahead of Bitcoin at $116.3 million and Ethereum at $88.8 million. Even so, concentrated Korean liquidity can still create local price impulses capable of influencing SHIB’s global chart.
