The UK government backed an independent review recommending that all magistrates and judges in the country be trained to address the projected rise in cases of fraud through artificial intelligence and money laundering via cryptocurrencies.

The report, titled “Fraud in the Digital Age” and published by the Home Office, was produced under the direction of lawyer Jonathan Fisher KC within the framework of the Independent Review of Disclosure and Fraud Offences.

The report warns that scams could soon account for half of all crimes in England and Wales, with nearly 4.1 million cases recorded in the past year. The Financial Ombudsman Service estimates that more than half of investment scams involve crypto assets, while 58% of those surveyed by the Ada Lovelace Institute reported having been targeted by AI-driven financial fraud.

Furthermore, the report notes that the Judicial College, the body responsible for judicial training in England and Wales, should review whether the existing course on complex trials needs to be updated or replaced by a specific module, which in some cases could become mandatory.

Fisher emphasized that knowledge of crypto asset laundering and AI scams should extend to the entire judiciary, not only to specialized courts in major cities.
