This Thursday, Shielded Labs introduced Project Epoch. It is a cryptographic research and engineering initiative aimed at shielding the Zcash network against quantum computing. The technical proposal, led by a specialized team of cryptographers including Ulrich Haböck, Luke Edwards, and Suyash Bagad, will develop production-ready post-quantum cryptography schemes backed by formal verification.

This launch comes at a pivotal juncture in the crypto ecosystem, where the eventual deployment of quantum computers and advanced artificial intelligence models could compromise traditional protocols based on elliptic curves. By implementing high-assurance defenses and mathematical verification, Shielded Labs seeks to safeguard Zcash’s financial privacy and monetary integrity against state-sponsored attacks or code implementation flaws.
The team will build on its post-quantum developments on top of the recovery bridge already initiated in the NU6.3 network upgrade, working toward a comprehensive protocol transition to secure ZEC over the long term.
