Sei has introduced SIP-6, a proposal to replace its current consensus mechanism with Autobahn, a technology designed to achieve 200,000 transactions per second and finality in under 250 milliseconds. The change will be one of the main components of Giga, the blockchain’s infrastructure upgrade.
Currently, each block on Sei is built by a single validator. Autobahn proposes replacing this model with a system of 40 validators broadcasting transactions simultaneously, while a deterministic rule establishes their execution order.
The new mechanism aims to reduce transaction censorship and limit transaction reordering, practices associated with maximal extractable value (MEV). It will also ensure that cancellation orders receive the same protections as other transactions, a particularly important feature for market makers.
The proposal is part of Giga, which also includes changes to the blockchain’s execution and storage layers. Its first components, Ares and Eidos, are already live on mainnet.
Autobahn has not yet been approved or deployed on mainnet. Before activation, SIP-6 must complete the governance process, undergo public testing and independent audits. The migration outlined in SIP-3 must also be completed.
Until then, Sei will continue operating under its current consensus mechanism, with no changes for users or staking rewards.
