Monad, the Ethereum-compatible blockchain that raised $225 million in a round led by Paradigm in 2024, has submitted a proposal to redesign the mechanism by which wallets manage their access credentials. The core objective is to decouple a permanent account address from the keys that control it, a modification that could revolutionize the security experience for users on the network.

Today, losing a wallet’s private key means permanently losing access to its funds. Migrating to a more robust security system requires creating a new wallet and transferring all assets. The proposal aims to eliminate both limitations.

Monad Bets on Post-Quantum Security as a Network Priority

The document was authored by Kushal Babel and Jan Camenisch, who described its design as a path to create and offer “natively post-quantum accounts, social recovery and user-friendly schemes such as passkeys“. The proposal, published as a new MIP, is still in draft stage: the more detailed technical specifications for its implementation have yet to be written.

Under this scheme, a user could add, replace or remove the credentials that authorize transactions without modifying their account address. Those credentials could include traditional cryptographic keyspasskeys linked to mobile or desktop devices, multiple signers or algorithms designed to withstand the computing power of quantum computers.

The quantum threat is not a distant scenario for the industry — it is already a latent one. Bitcoin is exploring various signature schemes resistant to this type of attack, and Ethereum has made post-quantum security a formal research priority encompassing wallets, staking and smart contracts.

Targeting Account Recovery

The proposal also contemplates account recovery without the need to move assets. A Monad user could configure their account so that, in the event of losing the primary key, two trusted individuals acting together can install a replacement key. Similarly, it would be possible to convert an existing account into a multisig wallet or migrate to a post-quantum scheme without changing the address.

Monad’s network holds approximately $939 million locked in its decentralized finance applications, according to DefiLlama, with roughly $732 million in stablecoins. Existing accounts would continue to function normally if the changes were eventually adopted.
