A couple around 50 years old suffered a robbery of approximately €900,000 (nearly $1 million) in Bitcoin following a violent home invasion in Le Chesnay, a town near Versailles, France. According to broadcaster TF1, three men who identified themselves as police officers gained entry to the residence and, once inside, produced a knife and threatened to attack the woman unless her partner transferred the funds to a wallet under their control.

The Versailles public prosecutor’s office confirmed the theft of the cryptocurrencies and indicated that the investigation was handed over to the Brigade de Répression du Banditisme (BRB), a specialized unit of the French security forces. No arrests have been made so far. Potential charges include kidnapping, armed robbery, organized crime, and criminal conspiracy.

There is a growing wave of robbery and physical attacks against cryptocurrency users in France, known as wrench attacks — a method in which criminals bypass technical means and resort to direct coercion to seize digital assets.

The country has accumulated a series of high-profile cases, including the assault on a crypto executive and his family in Verneuil-sur-Seine in January 2026 and the kidnapping of Ledger chief executive officer David Balland. Last May, French police detained 12 suspects linked to investigations into cryptocurrency-related kidnappings, though the wave of violence shows no signs of abating.
