TL;DR

  • ETF Launch: Grayscale listed the Zcash ETF on NYSE Arca, converting its long‑running trust into a tradable product.
  • Security Fix: Developers patched a critical flaw in Zcash’s shielded pool before the Zcash ETF debut.
  • Investor Demand: Grayscale says the Zcash ETF meets rising interest in privacy‑focused assets and broader digital‑asset diversification.

Grayscale’s decision to launch the first Zcash ETF arrives at a pivotal moment for the privacy‑focused cryptocurrency. The new ZCSH listing on NYSE Arca marks the conversion of the long‑running Zcash Trust into a fully tradable fund, giving investors a streamlined way to track ZEC’s price without holding the token.

The debut also follows months of scrutiny after developers patched a critical vulnerability in Zcash’s shielded transaction system, placing the asset’s privacy model under renewed industry attention. Throughout the rollout, Grayscale framed the Zcash ETF as a response to rising demand for privacy‑centric digital assets.

A New Listing Built From a Long‑Running Trust

The Zcash ETF began trading Tuesday, listing a nine‑year‑old investment product that Grayscale first launched as a trust in 2017. The firm filed in November to convert it into an ETF, and the new structure allows shareholders to own exposure through brokerage accounts rather than holding ZEC directly. Grayscale set a 2.5% fee, with revenue directed back into the Zcash ecosystem to support development and network growth.

Steve Vanourny, Grayscale’s Head of Index, said the maturity of the network, its Bitcoin‑derived monetary design and its optional privacy made this the right moment to bring the Zcash ETF to market. He added that investors increasingly want access to assets beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum through familiar brokerage channels.

The launch of the Zcash ETF comes shortly after developers disclosed and patched a four‑year‑old vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool. The flaw, discovered using Claude Opus 4.8, could have enabled counterfeit ZEC creation, though the network’s privacy features made it impossible to determine whether it had been exploited.

An emergency patch arrived June 1, followed by July’s Ironwood upgrade, which replaced Orchard and added accounting rules to trap any counterfeit coins. Vanourny said the Zcash ETF will be judged by adoption, utility and network security, noting that privacy remains a defining theme as digital assets scale.
