Ethereum and Base developers ended the collaboration aimed at unifying two account abstraction proposals —EIP-8130 and EIP-8141— and will pursue separate standards instead of a shared design. The information was confirmed by Derek Chiang, developer at Ethlabs, in a post on X.
Both proposals aim to simplify wallet usage: among other improvements, they would allow users to pay fees without holding ETH in their account and sign transactions with a phone passkey. For weeks, the authors of EIP-8130 and EIP-8141 attempted to define a shared standard that could work for both Ethereum’s layer 1 and Base’s layer 2.

However, talks broke down last week following a fundamental divergence in each network’s priorities. Ethereum emphasizes censorship resistance, privacy and security, while Base targets scale, customization and compliance. “While we identified several technical solutions, all of them required at least one side to give up at least a little on their core objectives,” Chiang explained, adding that the direct consequence is that the burden of managing the resulting fragmentation will fall on wallet developers.
Wallet Developers Will Bear the Brunt
If both proposals are implemented as planned, wallet developers will need to support two distinct native transaction formats. Chiang was moderately optimistic on the matter: “If executed well, and if the wallet community manages to bridge the fragmentation, we could end up with the best possible UX for end users.”
As for the status of each proposal, Ethereum incorporated EIP-8141 —dubbed Frame Transactions— into the roadmap of its upcoming Hegotá upgrade, with the “must-ship” label assigned by the Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster.
The proposal seeks to make account abstraction native to Ethereum in order to improve security and post-quantum readiness, treating each transaction as a sequence of programmable “frames” that validate the sender, approve who pays gas and execute the user’s actions.
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum and co-author of the proposal, described it as “an omnibus that solves every outstanding problem AA set out to address,” and noted that it has reached a state “close to optimal.”
For its part, EIP-8130, led by Base, introduces a new transaction type and an onchain “Keystore” that stores each account’s approved signers and authenticators, offering custom authentication, call bundling and gas sponsorship.
