TL;DR
- Bitcoin fell below $84,000 after a third failed attempt to clear the $87,722 yearly open, making the lower boundary decisive for near-term structure.
- Bitfinex says short positioning and dense onchain cost basis around $84,000 could amplify either a squeeze higher or a faster decline toward $81,300.
- ETF demand remains positive overall but has lost momentum, while Bitfinex’s base case keeps BTC between $81,300 and $86,500 ahead of October 14 CPI.
Bitcoin has slipped back below $84,000 after a third failed attempt in two weeks to break decisively above the $87,722 yearly open, leaving a critical short-term threshold. In an official Bitfinex Alpha update, analysts said a sustained loss of $84,000 would break the immediate consolidation structure, while the broader recovery also depends on positive ETF flows, profitable short-term-holder selling and price holding above the $81,300 macro pivot. The next move now depends on whether Bitcoin can defend the $84,000 floor as spot demand and recent-buyer profitability are tested together.
$84,000 Becomes the Market’s Main Decision Point
The latest decline triggered $510.6 million in crypto futures liquidations over 24 hours, including $417.6 million in long positions, with roughly $300 million erased within one hour as Bitcoin broke below $84,000. Open interest rose only 0.5% from October 5, but funding remained positive between 5% and 6.5% annualized. Bitfinex says the combination suggests fresh short positioning entered as longs were forced out, creating potential squeeze conditions if Bitcoin reclaims and holds the level. Options remained calm, with 30-day implied volatility at 35.9 and the October 16 expiry pricing an expected range of roughly $80,700 to $87,300.

Onchain data adds weight to the threshold. About 1.72 million BTC, equivalent to 8.6% of circulating supply, was acquired between $84,000 and $86,500 as of October 6, with nearly 769,000 BTC concentrated between $84,000 and $84,500. At $84,000, supply in profit falls to 70%, putting more than 1.1 million BTC into unrealized loss. That dense cost basis makes $84,000 a major inflection point, while the thinner supply zone below it could accelerate a move toward $81,300. Short-term holder SOPR stood at 1.01, with a sustained drop below 1 signaling realized losses among recent buyers.
Institutional demand remains supportive but has weakened. Spot Bitcoin ETFs posted a $89.8 million net outflow on October 5 followed by a $118.8 million inflow on October 6, while average daily inflows fell from $341.7 million during the mid-September expansion to $35 million over the past five sessions. Bitfinex sees no broad institutional exit yet, but the slowdown means Bitcoin may need stronger spot demand to regain $87,722. Its base case is consolidation between $81,300 and $86,500 ahead of the October 14 US CPI release. A break below $81,300 would shift Bitfinex’s outlook, putting $77,400 True Market Mean in focus.
