TL;DR

  • The Aavegotchi community approved, with over 95% support, the migration from Polygon to Base and the deactivation of the Geist contract.
  • All game assets will be duplicated on Base, while contracts on Polygon will be locked to prevent changes or transfers.
  • Pixelcraft Studios reduced its team for sustainability and chose Base due to its liquidity, technical support, and integration with Coinbase and Farcaster.

The Aavegotchi community approved the migration of its ecosystem from Polygon to Base, a layer-2 network on Ethereum developed by Coinbase.

The decision received over 95% of the votes within the DAO and involves the full transfer of current assets and functionalities. The proposal includes the deactivation of the Geist contract, which acted as a layer 3, and the duplication of all in-game elements—avatars, land, badges, and wearables—on the new network.

The Factors Behind Aavegotchi’s Decision

The migration takes place amid the decline of NFT and gaming-related projects, where a lack of interest has especially impacted less active networks. Pixelcraft Studios, the project’s developer, acknowledged having downsized its team to reduce costs and prioritize operational sustainability.

The choice of Base was based on liquidity, adoption, and technical compatibility. Unlike other options considered, such as Arbitrum or Ronin, Base showed higher activity among Ethereum-compatible networks. The presence of the GHST token on decentralized exchanges like Aerodrome and Uniswap on Base, along with its integration with Coinbase Wallet and social platforms like Farcaster, influenced the voting outcome.

How Long Will the Migration Take?

The Aavegotchi team expects to complete the process within four to six weeks, including audits of the new contracts. Existing assets on Polygon will remain untouched. Although they will still be available on the original network, their contracts will be modified to prevent movement or state changes, so that the operational version will exist solely on Base. To facilitate the transition, users will only need to reconnect their wallets to the new environment.

Aavegotchi was created in collaboration with the lending protocol Aave and allows users to link NFTs to yield-generating assets via aTokens. Since its launch, it has raised $30 million through a prolonged token sale without venture capital involvement. 75% of those funds remain under DAO control. The migration to Base aims to stabilize project activity and improve the user experience
