Leaders from nine blockchain organizations launched the Quantum Alliance on October 15 to create open standards for assessing post-quantum readiness across blockchains, wallets and infrastructure. The initiative addresses the long-term risk that sufficiently capable quantum computers could eventually compromise the elliptic-curve signatures securing networks such as Bitcoin, while no existing quantum computer can currently perform such an attack.

The Alliance plans to establish common testing criteria and benchmarks covering transaction signatures, key management, consensus, zero-knowledge proofs and peer-to-peer connections. Its work will initially be divided across blockchain migration, post-quantum zero-knowledge systems, wallet security and cross-chain compatibility, with all standards and reference designs intended to be published openly for developers and networks to use.

The group will also examine how existing networks could migrate funds and exposed keys into post-quantum schemes without disrupting live systems. The next milestone is publishing a shared definition of blockchain quantum readiness alongside practical testing and migration guidance, giving exchanges, custodians and developers a common framework for evaluating security claims as quantum technology advances.
