TL;DR

  • Jesse Pollak, creator of Base, believes tokenized equities and stablecoins pegged to currencies other than the U.S. dollar will lead the next tokenization cycle.
  • According to Pollak, the tokenized stocks launched by Coinbase on Base generate between $70 million and $100 million in daily trading volume.
  • Base will expand its trading, payments, and financing services throughout 2027, with a particular focus on transactions automated through artificial intelligence.

Jesse Pollak, creator of Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase, believes tokenized equities and non-dollar stablecoins will drive the next growth cycle for digital assets.

During an interview with The Block at Token2049 Singapore, Pollak said the tokenization of U.S. and international equities presents a particularly attractive market opportunity. He also highlighted the potential of stablecoins pegged to local currencies.

Currently, Base supports 32 stablecoins denominated in 21 currencies, including the euro, Canadian dollar, Nigerian naira, and Indonesian rupiah.

Pollak Highlights the Growth of Tokenized Equities

According to Pollak, the supply of tokenized equities increased from approximately $400 million in September 2025 to $3.3 billion last month, an increase of more than eightfold.

Coinbase launched these products on Base six weeks ago. They currently generate between $70 million and $100 million in daily trading volume, with 50 stocks available and plans to reach 250 by the end of October.

Pollak emphasized that these instruments allow investors to trade around the clock, transfer assets directly, and access international markets.

Regarding stablecoins, he noted that more than 99% of their supply is pegged to the U.S. dollar, although he expects local currencies to see greater adoption in payment systems.

Base Will Expand Its Trading, Payments, and Financing Services in 2027

Pollak explained that Base is focusing on three areas: trading, payments, and financing.

In trading, the network aims to make business transactions easier through simpler interfaces and APIs. It also plans to improve the performance of decentralized exchanges and other trading systems.

In payments, Base is working with Cloudflare to develop infrastructure capable of processing up to one million transactions per second, with particular attention to automated machine-to-machine payments.

The network also aims to simplify business access to financing services through technical improvements and new APIs.

Pollak believes artificial intelligence agents will play an increasingly important role in these activities over the next two years.

Regarding the announced shutdowns of Blast and Abstract, he argued that Layer 2 networks need differentiated products and a distribution strategy. He acknowledged the work of both teams but noted that not every project can become a sustainable business.
