TL;DR

  • The FBI and the Australian Federal Police dismantled an international cybercriminal network that laundered millions in cryptocurrencies through darknet forums.
  • Two young men from Perth, aged 21 and 23, compromised the infrastructure of more than 1,000 organizations and stole 500,000 user credentials.
  • Those detained inserted malware into open-source tools to gain access to corporate networks and then sell that access for cryptocurrencies.

The United States Embassy in Australia and the FBI jointly announced the dismantling of an international crypto asset laundering network that operated in service of a global cybercriminal syndicate.

The operation was carried out in coordination with the Australian Federal Police and is presented by Washington as a demonstration of security agencies’ capacity to deanonymize and seize cryptocurrencies anywhere in the world.

How the Criminals Operated

The arrests took place in Perth, Western Australia. Those detained are Reuben Ian Thomson, 21, and Louis Michael Gebler, 23. According to investigators, both orchestrated a global software supply chain attack: they inserted malware into widely used open-source development tools, which allowed them to covertly access the infrastructure of more than 1,000 organizations worldwide. The result was the theft of 300 gigabytes of corporate data and 500,000 user credentials.

Access to those compromised networks was sold on clandestine darknet forums in exchange for cryptocurrencies. To launder the proceeds, the accused relied on decentralized mixers and distributed chains of digital wallets. During the raids, the FBI and authorities seized large amounts of crypto assets and properties acquired with those funds. An Australian court has already formally charged Thomson with operating on illicitly obtained proceeds exceeding $100,000.

The FBI Takes on Transborder Cybercrime

The FBI’s Deputy Legal Attaché, Daud Andish, warned that “hiding behind a screen is no longer a shield from the rule of law.” The U.S. diplomatic mission made clear that the cross-border pursuit of cybercriminals and the dismantling of cryptocurrency laundering channels respond directly to the current administration’s priorities.

Hackers

Security experts point out that the case makes clear there is a growing practice whereby the FBI operates across geographic borders and sovereign jurisdictions to control illicit capital flows, a trend that generates both institutional backing and open questions about the limits of that extraterritorial authority.
