Zcash engineers have released Zakura Common, an open-source cryptography toolkit designed to cut the time required to create private transactions from more than three seconds to under 200 milliseconds in some cases. The software comes from the team behind Zakura, the Zcash node launched in July as part of a broader scaling effort. The breakthrough targets one of privacy’s least visible bottlenecks: the heavy cryptographic work a wallet must complete before a shielded payment can even be sent on ordinary consumer hardware. Private transactions conceal sender, receiver and amount while still proving network rules are satisfied.

Zakura Common Pushes Zcash Privacy Toward Payment-Speed Performance

On mobile devices, Zakura says the new stack makes transaction creation more than 14 times faster, while desktop performance improves by more than five times. Hashing becomes over 21 times faster, and nodes can verify private transactions between four and eight times faster. The upgrade is not just about headline latency, because it also accelerates the surrounding work required to keep private payments practical at scale during periods of heavier activity. Wallets should sync faster, full nodes can check transactions more quickly and fewer orphaned blocks are expected as the new libraries spread across implementations.

The rollout is notable because it does not require a Zcash network upgrade. Wallet developers can adopt Zakura Common on the existing network, while Zakura itself has already moved to the new stack in version 1.3.0 and Vizor Wallet is among the first adopters. That deployment path could let performance gains reach users without waiting for a protocol-wide activation cycle across the wider Zcash ecosystem. The software can also handle the proposed 25-second block times associated with Zcash’s next major upgrade, NU7, giving the toolkit relevance beyond today’s transaction-construction bottleneck.

Zakura’s ambitions extend far beyond shaving seconds from wallet interactions. When the node launched in July, its developers outlined a goal of supporting more than 50,000 private transactions per second, compared with an estimated ceiling of about one transaction per second for current wallet software. The larger objective is to make privacy infrastructure fast enough for everyday payments while preserving the protections that make shielded Zcash transactions distinctive for ordinary users worldwide. Project Tachyon has also moved to the new cryptography stack, and ZEC rose about 5% toward $839 after the release before later weakening alongside the broader market.
