TL;DR
- Mirae Asset completed the acquisition of 97.15% of Korbit, South Korea’s oldest cryptocurrency exchange, and will rebrand it as Digital X.
- The company seeks to build an ecosystem that integrates real-world assets, STOs, stablecoins and digital assets into a single platform.
- Despite controlling less than 1% of the Korean market, Mirae is not aiming to surpass Upbit or Bithumb, but to position itself as institutional infrastructure.
Mirae Asset, one of Asia’s largest independent financial groups with assets under management exceeding one trillion dollars, completed the acquisition of 97.15% of Korbit, the oldest cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea.
The transaction received regulatory approval from the country’s Fair Trade Commission, and the company already announced the rebranding of the platform under the name Digital X, where the “X” symbolizes an uncharted future and the unlimited possibilities that emerge when different forms of value intersect.
Korbit Will Become Infrastructure
Mirae Asset’s ambition goes far beyond a facelift. The group announced plans to develop Digital X as a “smart investment platform” where investment knowledge, information and analysis are organically connected.
In practice, this means building an ecosystem that integrates real-world assets, security token offerings, stablecoins, traditional assets and digital assets seamlessly. The goal is to position the new version of Korbit as an infrastructure layer, not as another exchange competing for trading volume in a highly competitive local market.
Korbit currently holds less than 1% of the cryptocurrency market in South Korea, far behind Upbit and Bithumb. However, Mirae Asset made clear it is not seeking to displace either competitor. “We intend to combine Mirae Asset’s extensive global investment experience with Korbit’s digital asset capabilities to promote the solid and sustainable growth of the industry,” the company stated in a press release.
An Institutional Profile as a Differentiating Factor
The group also confirmed that Digital X will strictly comply with anti-money laundering standards, identity verification and fraud detection, a clear signal that the platform targets both institutional clients and the retail segment.
Mirae Asset Consulting was designated as the acquiring entity following a comprehensive evaluation of synergies with the digital asset business. For the time being, the company ruled out moving on the remaining share percentage and stated that its focus will be exclusively on strengthening Digital X’s competitiveness.
