The preparation for the post-quantum era is no longer an academic discussion or a long-term preventive exercise. Coinbase published a technical document signed by its Chief Information Security Officer, Jeff Lunglhofer, detailing three specific lines of action to shield its infrastructure and contribute to the security of the Bitcoin ecosystem ahead of the eventual arrival of quantum computers capable of breaking current cryptography.
The starting point is the company’s own custody system. CoreKMS, the native key management system that protects approximately 99.9% of assets under custody, will be progressively replaced by PQ-CoreKMS, a version designed under post-quantum standards.

Within one year, the company plans to deliver an automated signing pipeline combining secure enclaves, secret-sharing, and threshold cryptography, with support for any post-quantum signing algorithm. Over the following two to three years, a dedicated research team will develop full Multi-Party Computation capabilities for lattice-based schemes, ensuring that keys are never reconstructed at a single point.
Coinbase Formed a Consortium Seeking to Protect Bitcoin
The second and third lines of action target the Bitcoin protocol directly. In August, Coinbase will co-host a working session at Stanford alongside core developers, cryptographers, and researchers, focused on viable post-quantum migration strategies. The company described this event as the first in a series of recurring sessions aimed at sustaining technical debate and continuity.
Additionally, Coinbase confirmed its participation as a founding member of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, an initiative bringing together BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, Blockstream, and Strategy, among others.
The company will allocate funds and engineering resources to open source projects, including support for proposals such as BIP-360. The Consortium will also serve as a public reference source on the security status of Bitcoin and its readiness for the quantum scenario.
Coinbase acknowledges that no single company can solve this challenge alone and that uncertainty over timelines does not justify delaying preparation — quite the opposite.
