TL;DR:

  • Mastercard launched Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M), a service for programmatic payments executed by AI agents at machine speed.
  • The system supports micropayments of fractions of a cent with multi-rail settlement, including cards, accounts and stablecoins.
  • More than 30 partners participate in the ecosystem, including Coinbase, Stripe, OKX, Ripple, Adyen and the Solana Foundation.

Mastercard introduced Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M), a new payment service designed for artificial intelligence agents to execute transactions programmatically, continuously and at machine speed. The announcement was made by the company alongside more than 30 founding partners including Adyen, Coinbase, Stripe, OKX, Cloudflare, Ripple, Ant International and the Solana Foundation, among others.

The service is a response to the expansion of autonomous commerce, where AI agents no longer merely assist decisions but act on them: contracting services, paying for computational resources and coordinating transaction chains without human intervention. An agent managing a store could, for example, purchase a domain, contract hosting, acquire images and configure payment pages within a defined budget, all from a single user instruction.

What Does AP4M Do?

AP4M draws on four core capabilities: credentialing of agents with intent verification, programmatic configuration of spending rules and limits, high-frequency transactions between verified systems and guaranteed multi-rail settlement, covering cards, bank accounts and stablecoins.

Mastercard Sets a New Standard for Autonomous Commerce

Jorn Lambert, Mastercard’s chief product officer, argues that AP4M is the necessary condition for what he called “a superbloom of AI business models“, where payments occur at very high volumes, very low values and with minimal latency. The executive noted that this shift represents in itself a structural transformation of digital commerce, not merely an increase in transaction volume.

This service also expands Mastercard’s Agent Pay program, also launched in 2025, which establishes how AI agents participate in payment systems with verifiable identity. Where Agent Pay defines the trust frameworks, AP4M is oriented specifically toward the low-value automated transactions that occur continuously in the background of digital commerce.

From the partners’ perspective, the value proposition is clear: stablecoins, secure wallet infrastructure and open standards such as the x402 protocol integrate with Mastercard’s global network to offer interoperability, governance and reliable settlement at scale. Companies such as Ripple, Coinbase and Tempo highlighted the importance of compliance controls and auditing keeping pace with execution speed, ensuring that agents can only act within authorized parameters.
