After three years of collaboration, Chaos Labs, the fundamental firm in Aave’s financial security, has announced its official departure as risk manager. The firm’s founder, Omer Goldberg, stated that the split responds to a lack of economic profitability and, primarily, a “deep misalignment” with Aave Labs on how to manage security during the transition to the new V4 version. This exit follows those of other key contributors such as BGD Labs and the Aave Chan Initiative (ACI).

The breakup occurs at a critical moment: the recent launch of Aave V4. Goldberg warned that the migration from V3 will double the technical and operational workload, which required a budget of $8 million compared to the $5 million offered. Additionally, internal political tension has increased significantly due to criticisms of Aave Labs’ unilateral control over governance and revenue flows, creating a crisis of confidence among the long-standing technical providers of the DeFi sector’s largest lending protocol.
Despite Aave remaining one of the most profitable platforms on-chain, the loss of its last major technical contributor raises questions about the operational stability of its infrastructure. The next step for the Aave DAO will be to urgently find a new partner to take over the complex risk management of versions V3 and V4 to ensure the protocol’s solvency.
