TL;DR

  • ZKsync launched the Atlas upgrade, boosting Ethereum’s scalability with over 15,000 TPS, one-second finality, and near-zero fees.
  • The upgrade turns Ethereum into the central liquidity hub, allowing L2s to access capital from the main network.
  • The upgrade facilitates institutional participation and the use of real-world assets (RWA).

ZKsync released its Atlas upgrade, designed to improve Ethereum’s scalability and efficiency, particularly for Layer-2 solutions.

The upgrade enables over 15,000 transactions per second (TPS) with one-second finality and almost zero fees. According to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, ZKsync’s work is “underrated and valuable,” highlighting Atlas’s importance for the network’s evolution.

Atlas Enhances Efficiency Across the Ethereum Ecosystem

Before this upgrade, each L2 network had to maintain its own liquidity pool, causing fragmentation and slower transactions between networks. With the upgrade, Ethereum becomes ZKsync’s central liquidity hub, allowing L2s to access the main network’s capital directly. This integration reduces transfer times between solutions to roughly one second and speeds up L1-to-L2 settlement, which now finalizes faster than a single Ethereum block.

Atlas also facilitates the entry and participation of institutions and the use of real-world assets (RWA). Platforms that require speed and security can process funds almost in real time, removing the need to wait days for transactions to complete. This change turns Ethereum into an efficient and reliable liquidity core, capable of supporting both DeFi operations and institutional applications.

ZKsync expects Atlas to act as a catalyst for Ethereum’s next growth phase, bringing the network closer to a fast, scalable, and dependable base layer. The combination of high speed, minimal costs, and centralized liquidity is crucial for developing more complex DeFi applications and integrating new institutional participants.
