Brian Garry Sewell, 54, of Washington County, Utah, was sentenced on Jan. 15 to 36 months in prison for wire fraud that cost investors over $2.9 million, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah said. DOJ said he also received a concurrent 36-month sentence in a separate case tied to an unlicensed money transmitting business that converted bulk cash into cryptocurrency.
The court ordered Sewell to pay $3,605,182 in restitution to defrauded investors, a mortgage lender and a credit union, plus $217,727 to the Department of Homeland Security. Prosecutors said he raised funds from at least 17 investors between December 2017 and April 2024 by misrepresenting his experience and ability to generate large returns, and later ran Rockwell Capital Management from March to September 2020, converting over $5.4 million to crypto for third parties, including criminals engaged in fraud and drug trafficking.
Federal officials positioned the outcome as reinforcing their enforcement posture against investment fraud and unlicensed cash-to-crypto conversion services. Next, watch for restitution recovery efforts and follow-on actions tied to similar bulk-cash conversion activity.
