Three teenagers who posed as Amazon delivery drivers stole £3.1 million in cryptocurrency from a home in East London and were arrested just hours later. The attackers, aged 16 and 17 at the time, gained access to the property by pretending to make a delivery, forced the victim to transfer the crypto assets, and fled in a blue BMW X3 belonging to the victim.
After leaving the scene, the suspects posted videos on Snapchat from inside the stolen vehicle. The footage showed their route, celebratory gestures, and, in one recording, the victim during the forced transfer. The victim reported the car stolen, triggering tracking through automatic number plate recognition cameras.
The BMW was detected on the M1 in Northamptonshire less than three hours after the burglary. Multiple police forces coordinated the pursuit. During the escape, one of the suspects reached speeds close to 100 mph. The chase ended with a tactical stop on the M6 in Warwickshire.
Sheffield Crown Court sentenced Faris Hassan and Mikyle Bethune, both now 18, along with a third accomplice aged 17, to a combined total of 16 years in youth detention for aggravated burglary and related offenses. The stolen cryptocurrency was traced and recovered within 72 hours and returned to the victim two weeks later.
