John Collison, co-founder and president of Stripe, predicted that stablecoins and high-performance blockchains will be the central infrastructure of what he described as an imminent “torrent” of commerce driven by artificial intelligence agents.
Collison appeared on a podcast where he argued that autonomous software agents are moving beyond the experimental stage to take on real economic activity, from payments to capital allocation.
Stripe integrated the x402 standard to allow AI agents to transact in USDC on Base, Coinbase’s layer-2 network built on Ethereum. This integration enables agents to send and receive stablecoin payments autonomously, without human intervention in the payment process.
This positions Stripe alongside a growing set of companies building for the so-called “agentic economy.” Meanwhile, Coinbase launched tools to assign wallets to any agent, while MoonPay introduced a non-custodial layer that allows AI systems to generate wallets and operate onchain. Ethereum developers are also advancing the formalization of native standards for agents on the main network.
