John Collison, co-founder and president of Stripe, predicted thatĀ stablecoins and high-performance blockchainsĀ will be the central infrastructure of what he described as an imminentĀ “torrent” of commerce driven byĀ artificial intelligence agents.
Collison appeared on a podcast where he argued that autonomous software agents are moving beyond the experimental stage to take onĀ real economic activity, from payments to capital allocation.
Stripe integrated the x402 standard to allow AI agents to transact in USDC on Base, Coinbase’s layer-2 network built on Ethereum. This integration enables agents toĀ send and receive stablecoin payments autonomously, without human intervention in the payment process.
This positions Stripe alongside a growing set of companiesĀ building for the so-called “agentic economy.”Ā Meanwhile, Coinbase launched tools toĀ assign wallets to any agent,Ā while MoonPay introduced a non-custodial layer that allows AI systems toĀ generate wallets and operate onchain. Ethereum developers are also advancing theĀ formalization of native standards for agents on the main network.
