TL;DR

  • Metaplanet moved 2,400 BTC worth roughly $186 million into Coinbase Prime within three hours on August 31, using six deposits ranging from 103 to 800 BTC.
  • The company has transferred at least 4,750 BTC worth about $374 million through three clearly distinct Coinbase Prime moves since August 25, while still reporting 43,000 BTC on its balance sheet.
  • CEO Simon Gerovich says the transfers are custodial and do not signal liquidation.

Metaplanet moved 2,400 BTC, worth roughly $186 million, into Coinbase Prime within three hours on August 31, extending a rapid series of transfers by the Tokyo-listed Bitcoin treasury company. Onchain tracking showed six deposits ranging from 103 BTC to 800 BTC, with the largest single transfer valued near $62 million. The striking feature is not only the size of the move, but how quickly the company shifted such a large amount of Bitcoin into institutional custody. The latest activity brings renewed attention to how Metaplanet is managing liquidity while maintaining its reported treasury position today.

Coinbase Prime Transfers Build Into a Larger Pattern

The August 31 transfer was the third clearly distinct move to Coinbase Prime in less than a week. Metaplanet sent 1,000 BTC, worth about $79.77 million, on August 25, followed by another 1,350 BTC valued near $108 million on August 28. Together, those confirmed transfers amount to at least 4,750 BTC, worth roughly $374 million, moving into Coinbase Prime custody within days. Separate tracking around August 29 also flagged about 3,000 BTC moving during a rolling 24-hour period, although potential overlap makes that figure less suitable for a clean cumulative total across the reported period.

Metaplanet moved 2,400 BTC

Despite the transfers, Metaplanet still reports 43,000 BTC on its balance sheet, worth approximately $3.48 billion, at an average acquisition cost of about $96,191 per coin. CEO Simon Gerovich previously said the recent movements were custodial and did not indicate any intention to liquidate. That distinction matters because deposits to Coinbase Prime can support custody, collateral or over-the-counter execution without necessarily signaling a sale. None of the recent transfers has been accompanied by a confirmed reduction in Metaplanet’s reported Bitcoin holdings, keeping the company’s treasury figures unchanged despite the visible movement onchain during this period.

The transfers also coincide with Metaplanet’s proposed Superplanet venture, which would receive 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash, equal to about 4.9% of its current holdings. The U.S.-based, Nasdaq-listed treasury platform still requires a Super League shareholder vote in the fourth quarter plus filings and regulatory approvals in the United States and Japan. Centralizing Bitcoin with an institutional custodian could give Metaplanet greater flexibility ahead of that proposed transaction. Bitcoin’s price near $78,000 remains well below Metaplanet’s average acquisition cost, adding another layer of uncertainty around any speculation that the transfers represent near-term selling.
