Ilya Lichtenstein, one of the masterminds behind the $4.5 billion Bitfinex hack involving nearly 120,000 BTC, was released early under the First Step Act, the law signed by Donald Trump in 2018.
His release came after cooperating with federal prosecutors on other crypto-related cases. Lichtenstein publicly thanked the law and stated that he will focus on making a positive impact in cybersecurity and the crypto ecosystem.
His wife, Heather Morgan, also involved in the case, served roughly eight months of an 18-month sentence for money laundering. Both used fake identities and conducted micro-transactions to conceal the stolen Bitfinex funds. This presidential pardon adds to others already granted by Trump, including those for CZ and Ross Ulbricht
